When OEM is the right starting point
OEM fits a project with an established formula or technical specification. Send the version you control, explain which elements must remain unchanged and identify any alternatives you will consider. A retail label alone may omit processing requirements or the detail needed to reproduce a product. If major formulation decisions remain open, an ODM development discussion may be a better starting point.
Prepare a transferable specification
- Ingredient identities, quantities and the unit basis: per serving, per capsule or per batch.
- Raw-material requirements, approved substitutions and supporting supplier documents.
- Dosage format, fill or unit weight, sensory targets and packaging components.
- Required test methods, acceptance criteria, sampling responsibilities and release documents.
- Formula ownership, permitted use, artwork ownership and the person authorized to approve changes.
Compare feasibility before comparing unit prices
A quote should make clear which inputs are accepted as supplied and which need clarification. Compare the same formula revision, pack count and testing scope. Separate samples, development changes, tooling, artwork, testing, freight and other charges from the recurring product price. Ask for the trade term and delivery point so that two quotations can be compared on the same basis.
Approve changes explicitly
If an ingredient source, excipient, flavor, capsule shell or packaging component changes, record the proposed difference and the approval needed. Tie the sample identifier to the specification revision. Agree how production deviations, failed tests and replacement materials will be handled. Keep the final specification, accepted artwork and order confirmation together so the purchasing team and manufacturing partner use the same version.
Confirm the parties and release responsibilities
NutraGuild coordinates OEM discussions with manufacturing partner; it does not own a factory. Manufacturing, testing, label review and commercial responsibilities must be assigned in writing. Ask which documents will accompany the batch and who can authorize release. MOQ, capacity, timing and price remain subject to written confirmation for the actual project.
